AI-Native Terminal for macOS
In 2026, the terminal is where developers spend most of their AI time — running Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, and Cursor. An AI-native terminal is one built from day one for those workflows: MCP integration, session resume, and GUI affordances around AI-driven coding.
What makes a terminal "AI-native"?
A terminal is AI-native when it provides three things: (1) MCP tools so AI agents can control terminals programmatically, (2) detection and resume for interrupted AI CLI sessions, and (3) natural-language command generation inside the terminal itself.
Legacy terminals (iTerm2, Terminal.app, Alacritty) are text renderers wrapping a PTY. They have no concept of AI agents, no mechanism for agents to talk back to them, and no UI affordances around sessions like "this claude process died at step 14".
An AI-native terminal treats the AI agent as a first-class citizen. Why macOS developers care in 2026

Session resume — stop losing context
When a Claude Code session crashes, you normally re-launch, re-paste the prompt, and hope for the best. Session resume watches PTY processes, detects interrupted AI CLIs, and offers a one-click restart with context preserved.
Under the hood, Onda tags each pane with the CLI it is running and retains the last prompt plus working directory. On crash, the pane surfaces a banner: "Claude Code session ended unexpectedly — Resume". One click, and the CLI restarts at the same step.

Frequently asked questions
Is an AI-native terminal worth switching to if I already use iTerm2?
If you spend more than one hour per day in Claude Code, Codex CLI, or Gemini CLI, yes. The combination of MCP integration, session resume, and integrated Git/file/preview saves meaningful time. If your AI use is occasional, iTerm2 with an AI CLI alongside is still fine.
Does AI-native mean the terminal sends my commands to a cloud LLM?
Not in Onda. The terminal itself runs locally and sends nothing by default. AI features are driven by the AI CLI you launch inside a pane — Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI. Whatever network activity they do is their concern, not the terminal's.
Do I need an API key or subscription to use an AI-native terminal?
No. Onda itself is free and account-less. You only need an API key or subscription for the AI CLI you choose to run (Claude, OpenAI Codex, Gemini). That relationship is between you and your model provider; the terminal is the host, not the account owner.
What about privacy and enterprise use?

Is AI-native just split panes + a chat box?
No. That is surface-level. AI-native means architectural support for agents: MCP tool exposure, session lifecycle tracking, context-aware command generation, and GUI integrations that make AI-driven coding loops fast. A chat box bolted onto a legacy terminal is not the same thing.
Will this still matter in 2027?
Likely more, not less. AI coding agents are getting better and operating longer autonomously. The terminal is the interface — the better its integration with agents, the more of the loop the agent can own. Terminals without MCP and session lifecycle support will look dated quickly.
